PlayStation teams up with Bad Robot and the creator of Left 4 Dead for a co-op shooter

Engadget

It's surely time for the Super 8 game we've all been waiting for. Sony Interactive Entertainment has signed a deal to produce and publish a game from Bad Robot, JJ Abrams' production company. The two sides are keeping most of the details close to their chest for now, but the game is a four-player co-op shooter for PlayStation 5 and PC directed by someone who knows a thing or two about that genre: creator Mike Booth. Bad Robot Games -- which is a fully remote studio -- was formed in 2018 with the help of Tencent. It has lent a hand on games including (as an investor and creative consultant) as well as interactive streaming series .

Reflecting on a roller coaster year for robotics • TechCrunch

I'm excited by the boost this newsletter has been getting in recent months and wanted to keep the light on while I was out. Three weeks is the longest break I've taken for work in…ever, really. Went to a bunch of museums (do yourself a favor and check out Edward Hopper at the Whitney and Morris Hirshfield at the American Folk Art Museum -- can't recommend them enough) and spent a few days in Aruba, of all places. Still not sure why flights were so cheap, but if you're ever looking for a nice place to stay on the island for $150 a night, let me know. Go make friends with a miniature donkey.

Spotify strikes a multi-year deal with J.J. Abrams' new podcast unit

Engadget

Spotify's growing podcast ambitions now include a pact with a big studio before it truly gets started. The streaming music service has struck a multi-year deal that gives it "first look" access to podcasts from J.J. Abrams' new Bad Robot Audio unit. The move lets Spotify snap up exclusives from Bad Robot's planned mix of fiction and non-fiction shows. Bad Robot Audio hasn't yet detailed its releases, but it will have an experienced leader. She played an important role in Spotify's early podcast efforts, and is unsurprisingly eager to collaborate with her former employer in her field of expertise.

How Rude Humanoid Robots Can Mess With Your Head

WIRED

The little humanoid robot's name is Meccanoid, and it is a scoundrel. The well-meaning human test subject asks the robot: If you were to make a friend, what would you want them to know? "That I'm bored," Meccanoid says. A new participant asks Meccanoid the same question, but now the robot is programmed to be nice. What does this robot want the friend to know? "I already like him a lot," Meccanoid says. Researchers in France have been exposing human subjects to nasty and pleasant humanoids for good reason: They're conducting research into how a robot's attitude affects a human's ability to do a task. On Wednesday, they published their research in the journal Science Robotics, an issue that also includes research on how robots can pressure children into making certain decisions.

'The Cloverfield Paradox' would be doomed without Netflix

Engadget

The Cloverfield Paradox would have been a theatrical failure. It's exactly the sort of B-grade sci-fi critics tend to eviscerate. So how do you generate hype for a movie that's practically doomed? If you're Netflix, you unveil a trailer during the Super Bowl with an unprecedented announcement: you'll be able to watch the film right after the game ends. It's the sort of "holy shit" moment you could only pull off if you're a global entertainment powerhouse.

While RuPaul is a San Diego native, he moved to Atlanta for theatrical training before moving to the East Coast to make a name for himself, as recounted in a recent episode of Up/Close with The Hollywood Reporter. This production also marks the second time Bad Robot and Hulu have worked together.
